Title: “Protecting our lakes forever: moving from rehabilitation to prevention during a time of climate change”
Rehabilitation of our lakes and waterways is certainly on the agenda both locally and globally today. We have solved many large-scale environmental problems in the recent past, but can we learn from this history? What are the lessons within these past success stories and how do they provide guidance on how we might deal with the many current threats to our lakes? In a time when climate change has emerged as a large threat multiplier, how can we critically engage with the choices, actions, and wise management practices needed to protect Muskoka’s lakes and watersheds into the future?
Dr. Norman Yan is a Senior Research Scholar at York University and the Chair of the Friends of the Muskoka Watershed. He has devoted half a century of work to understanding human impacts on Ontario’s lakes, how the damage can be fixed, and its re-occurrence prevented. In 2012, he was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada.
