The Land Between is a grassroots non-governmental charitable organization working since 2007 to research, protect, and conserve a bioregion of the same name, spanning Parry Sound to Orillia in the west all the way to the Ottawa Valley in the east.
Our Mission, Vision, and Mandate
We are working to achieve bioregionalism in The Land Between; to foster cooperation between sectors and across levels that results in understanding, behaviours and adaptive solutions that benefit the entire region, from nature to people culture to the economy.
Our vision is to obtain a healthy and prosperous bioregion and planet that is healthy and intact with functional ecosystems, contains cultural vitality, fosters community leadership that is respectful and responsive, and promotes a sustainable economy.
Our mandate is to establish a sense of place and pride in place that is demonstrated in behaviours as well as relationships that respect the unique characteristics and needs of the land in The Land Between bioregion.

Our Strategic Actions
Each of the projects we select is achieved through a set of core actions
Functional Research: We conduct ongoing and pioneering research throughout our projects to inform applied actions and solutions in areas of ecology, economics, culture, and more. Research projects are integrative and iterative, investigating issues and impacts across sectors to understand how each parameter influences the other.
Collaboration: We work with partners at all levels across jurisdictions to apply meaningful solutions in the form of stewardship actions in priority areas.
Facilitating Sustainable Economic Development: We promote eco-based, culturally rooted tourism and a regional identity through things like interactive maps, our documentary and book, events and destination development.
Education: We engage with youth and landowners through community science and volunteerism, mentoring, workshops, presentations, and more. We also provide opportunities for hands-on, applied learning in research and stewardship projects.
Planning Input & Support: We provide information and data from our research to support decision-making for landowners, community groups, consultants, and governments ranging from natural heritage strategies to cultural plans, to Official Plans and federal documents. We provide forums of exchange, access to experts, case studies and community leaders/models.
Cultivating Relationships & Knowledge Sharing: We engage with community members, experts, groups, and governments, gathering and sharing information, expertise, and diverse perspectives. We operate in a Traditional Talking Circle open to the public, without hierarchy.
