Lakeland Science Research Forum and AGM
August 27 @ 7:00 am - 9:00 pm
We invite you for a night of research and contribute to our efforts to estimate priority actions for a sustainable future in The Land Between.
Join us at our annual AGM to explore research results and engage in discussions related to:
1. Lake Health: the Blue Lakes database has married lake data across the Highlands with data for over 20 years related to water quality, shoreland development, phosphorous and fisheries. This is likely the largest lake database in Ontario. We can now begin model trends and correlations between parameters, as well as explore the relationships between development, fisheries and more.
2. Working Watersheds: this project is a curriculum series for municipal councils, but also a toolkit of functional mapping. We are building capacity for balanced decisions in our communities. Here, we have mapped wetlands according to their role in the watershed/hydrograph, and assessed their value in water regulation and supply for lakes. We have also mapped flood risk across watersheds.
3. Human footprints: we have mapped the human footprint comparing development levels 20 years ago to today, and quantified losses according to township and habitat type. This model serves to assess impacts to wolf recovery, our overall ecological services and more.
4. Insect research: we have researched the relative availability of insects across various development scenarios to understand if our heritage bird species, such as whippoorwill, will have sufficient food, and what best management practices or thresholds exist to support them in the Land Between.
5. Road Threat Mitigation: our needs and designs to reduce mortality for the slow moving and fast declining turtle populations.
This is an evening of casual presentations and open discussions. The AGM proceedings will take approx 15 minutes at the onset of the evening. Refreshments will be served.
The event is on August 27th at 7-9pm at the Land Between office and HHOA centre at 6712 Gelert Road, Haliburton.
