Why This Matters

The Land Between, in partnership with the Canadian Wildlife Service, is leading pioneering research into the availability of moths, the primary prey of Eastern Whip-poor-wills and other aerial insectivores. By measuring moth abundance across different landscapes and land uses, this project uncovers the ecological thresholds, pressures, and conditions that support or suppress prey. The research highlights how natural cover, lighting, and adjacent land practices directly influence insect populations. This work not only addresses the urgent conservation needs of a declining bird species but also provides practical, science-based guidance for municipalities, landowners, and planners on how to build landscapes that sustain biodiversity.

The significance of this research extends far beyond Whip-poor-wills. Moths are a critical food source for countless birds, bats, amphibians, and fish, and they also serve as pollinators and indicators of ecosystem health. By understanding what drives or limits their abundance, we gain insights into the resilience of entire food webs and the health of landscapes that people also depend on for clean water, pollination, and climate stability. This project demonstrates that protecting biodiversity is inseparable from supporting healthy communities and economies, making it a cornerstone for conservation planning in Ontario and beyond.
