Feeding The Land Between

Food security is already an issue in Ontario, with 1 in 8 households reporting that they do not have consistent access to sufficient food. Despite this and the fact that our population is expected to grow in the coming decades, Ontario's agricultural sector has been shrinking, becoming increasingly import-reliant and focused on growing commercially valuable crops that do not feed people. The Land Between, however, stands out as an area of hope for a food-secure Ontario. This opportunity, as well as the state of agriculture in Ontario, is the focus of our Feeding The Land Between project.

Feeding The Land Between: A TLB-led research project

OUR VISION

The goal of our Feeding The Land Between project is to build and empower a regional network to take action and increase capacity for a food-secure Ontario. We believe that this can be achieved through partnership and collaboration.

You can learn more about our research and our plan to ensure Ontario is food-secure for generations to come below.

The State of Agriculture & Why the Feeding The Land Between Project is Necessary

Food security is not just an issue for Ontario or Canada. It is truly a global problem with various economic, social, and environmental threats that often work synergistically.

Global Threats to Agriculture Expand

All around the world farmers are experiencing changes in weather patterns, such as an increased instance of drought, which often negatively affects yields. Additionally, globalized supply chains are under massive corporate control and there is a low entrance rate of young people into the agricultural sector.

Canadian Threats to Agriculture Expand

Canadian agriculture has become dominated by highly profitable cash cropping. Typically very little quantities of cash crops are actually directly used for human consumption within Canada and Ontario. Canada relies heavily on food imports and is not a food sovereign nation. This makes Canada susceptible to trade disruptions, like those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic when food prices increased substantially. Within Canada itself, 70% of national food distribution is controlled by only three companies: Empire Company Limited (Sobeys), Loblaw Company Limited, and Metro.

Ontario's Agricultural Threats Expand

Ontario has some of the most fertile land in Canada, but it is dominated by cash crop production, much of which is destined for export. Southern Ontario is responsible for nearly all of Ontario's agriculture, however, development has decreased farmland area. Drastic reductions in the number of beef and dairy farms have been observed throughout the province.

The Land Between: An Area of Agricultural Opportunity

The Land Between (TLB) is a bioregion spanning Parry Sound and Orillia in the west to the Ottawa Valley in the east. Our research has determined four key factors that make TLB an extremely suitable place for growing food to help create a food-secure Ontario.

Nature

1

The region's environment provides many ecosystem services, like water filtration and pollination, to farmers free of charge. These services would be extremely costly to replicate with human-made infrastructure in other areas.

Culture

2

Agriculture has a long heritage in The Land Between. Throughout the region's history, farmers have had to adapt their practices to a dynamic and challenging landscape. This has resulted in a farming culture that is both adaptable and resilient.

Capacity

3

Land in The Land Between is particularly well suited for livestock and greenhouse growing. Much of this capacity, however, is going underutilizing due to a number of the threats previously mentioned, like a loss of farmers in the region.

Cost

4

Purchasing and operating a farm is significantly cheaper in The Land Between compared to Ontario's average. It is 50-60% less expensive to operate a farm here than in almost every other region in Southern Ontario.

Our Plan for a Food Secure Future

Despite the fact that TLB offers a unique opportunity to achieve food security in Ontario, it is not immune to the challenges facing agriculture as a whole, namely a lack of new farmers, difficulty in getting products to market, and more. With our foundational research laid into the threats facing agriculture in Ontario and beyond along with identifying TLB as an area of opportunity, the next stage of our Feeding The Land Between project involves an action-driven plan to reinvigorate agriculture in TLB.

1

Host stakeholder input and networking sessions

These networking sessions will include stakeholders, like farmers, distributors, market organizers, municipalities, and more.

2

Create space for connections and community building

Networking sessions will create space for food security stakeholders as well as capacity within the community, providing participants with more resources and outlets for training.

3

Identify areas of opportunity and priority actions to take

Based on feedback from networking sessions as well as other conversations, we can come up with a collaborative approach for prioritizing outcomes to advance food security in TLB and beyond.

4

Create local action plans and a dynamic regional strategy

With information and lessons learned in steps one through three, we can develop an informed and evidence-based plan that is outcome-driven for reducing food insecurity in Ontario. We can also determine the necessary resources to be developed.

5

Execute priority actions to reinvigorate farming in TLB

The final step involves preparing resources and executing on our strategy plan to enhance agricultural capacity, adaptation, and networks across the TLB region, the province of Ontario, and beyond. Through this, we can ensure that Ontarians are food-secure not only now, but also in the future.

We also plan to work with the amazing organizations that are already working in this capacity by supporting their strategic actions with data modelling at watershed scales, comprehensive research and analyses at all scales, and regional networking.  Additionally, we'll facilitate the sharing of their expertise and learnings to highlight their leadership with those who are at an earlier stage.

Feeding The Land Between: Next Stage Outcomes

Equipped with the information generated through the collaboration outlined above, we plan to produce five key resources to reinvigorate agriculture in TLB.

Municipal Food Charters Expand

TLB needs more municipal food charters. Currently, only 8 areas within TLB have accepted charters and few aspects of food security are considered in more common planning documents, such as official plans. We will help to propel the creation and adoption of such charters.

Comprehensive Marketing Plans Expand

Marketing agricultural products is often an obstacle for farmers who want to enter local markets. One of our outputs will be the creation of marketing plans that help farmers reach new markets with specific adaptations for the TLB context.

Maps of Existing Farms and Farm Potential Expand

By creating this set of maps we will have a better idea of how agricultural areas are changing and what their capacity is to enhance food security now and in the future.

List of District Assets and Strategies Expand

Many different townships and communities have diverse landscapes, extension services, adaptation methods and farming practices that could help others. By creating a list of these assets and strategies we will help to make this important information available to farmers across the entire TLB region.

Maps of Market Accessibility Expand

A common complaint from farmers is that they do not know where or how they can get their products into new markets. Understanding regional nuances, markets, and distribution channels will help us better discern and strategize how to overcome market accessibility issues.
