Think Turtle Conservation Initiative and Scout Canada’s 1st Bancroft Beavers & Cubs are helping the turtles on the roads by making these little green turtle signs bearing the message “WATCH 4 TURTLES”. These have been across Hastings County and beyond; in Bancroft, L’amable, Birds Creek, Maynooth, Ormsby, Coe Hill, Glen Alda, Apsley, Wilberforce, Haliburton, Lake St. Peter …Now Turtle Guardians is spreading the awareness created across Ontario.
A reminder about installation and bylaws: Please install the sign on “your property” by way of securing it to your mailbox post, fence or a tree on your property. If your property set-up does not accommodate any of these installation suggestions possibly you have a piece of wood used as a sign stake with a sign attached to it to be used on your property. Also, do not attach a “WATCH 4 TURTLES” sign to a town/county/municipality installed address post (911) or a hydro pole or a pre-existing street sign. There are signage by-laws for every county and municipality. Installing signs on property other then your own runs the risk of jeopardizing this awareness initiative.
CURE: Half of the funds from the sale of the signs and donations received will be donated to trauma care and treatment for the turtles admitted to wildlife rehabilitation centres and turtle hospitals in Ontario.
PREVENTION: Half of the funds will be donated to the Turtle Guardians Program to go towards the assessment of 927 high risk turtle road mortality locations throughout the 9 counties that make up Turtle Country as potential sites for turtle tunnels. Each tunnel would be accompanied by fencing installed to safely funnel the turtles into the tunnel and under the roads instead of on the road. A mitigation measure that has proven to be very effective.
