SUMMARY:Phrag Fighters - Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Invasive Phragmites is a large grass-like plant that is taking over Ontario’s wetlands and reducing biodiversity. The plant colonizes ditches\, bays and wetland pockets. It grows in such thick mats that turtles\, frogs\, and other animals cannot move through their native habitats. The plant is also tall\, and blocks sight lines along roadsides. In the spring Phrag Fighters locate areas where the plant is growing and harming local habitats. Then\, as are part of a team of 3-4 people\, Phrag Fighter teams adopt one or two wetland areas where they are responsible for removing the invasive plant using best practices (so that the seeds don’t spread). Phrag Fighter teams go out between one and three times each summer between June and early August to spade the plants\, bag them in dark bags\, and transport them to locations or landfills to be deposited.  There are two Phrag Fighter workshops: The first teaches Phrag Fighers how to identify the plants\, record locations of the plants in EDDMaps. The second teaches teams how to remove the plants using the best practices which help to stop the spread of the plant. Phrag Fighting is hard work but also fun and rewarding! \nAre you part of a Phrag Fighter team or looking to join one?  Join a phrag team here \nSign up for this workshop below: \n\n\n \n \n Phrag Fighters\n Training events for Phrag Fighter Volunteers \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone*Email*\n \n Event Date and Time\n \n Wednesday\, March 10th @ 7pm (surveying only)\n \n \n Thursday\, March 25th @ 7pm (surveying only)\n \n \n Thursday\, April 22nd @ 7pm (surveying only)\n \n \n Tuesday\, May 25th @ 6:30pm (both surveying and removal)\n \n \n Saturday\, May 29th @ 10am (both surveying and removal)\n \n \n Thursday\, June 3rd @ 6:30 pm (both surveying and removal)\n \n \n Saturday\, July 17th @ 1pm (both surveying and removal)

SUMMARY:Freshwater Stewardship Webinar Series. Planning for our Shorelands
DESCRIPTION:My name is Christopher Dennison and I am currently serving as the Municipal Policy Intern at Watersheds Canada. I am pleased to be featured as the third speaker in the free Freshwater Stewardship Community webinar series. \nPlease join me on Saturday\, March 13th at 10am EST for my webinar\, “Planning For Our Shorelands: A resource to help conserve the Ribbon of Life in Ontario’s Municipalities”. \nOntario is home to a diversity of freshwater lakes and rivers\, each surrounded by a series of unique shoreland ecosystems. Given the importance of shorelands to humans\, wildlife\, and the physical environment\, sustainable land-use practices in Ontario’s municipalities will be critical for protecting the shores of our lakes and rivers now and in the future. \nPlanning for our Shorelands is a collaborative project bringing together expert planners\, scientists\, and lake stewards from across the province. Its objective is to provide a meaningful best-management practices resource which promotes sustainable shoreland land-use practices and policies in Ontario’s municipalities. In this free webinar\, I will present on the importance of lake and river shoreland ecosystems\, share results from a series of surveys which gauge the current state of shoreland stewardship and land-use in Ontario\, and discuss the future of the Planning for our Shorelands project. \n\n\n\nYes\, I want to attend the Planning for our Shorelands webinar! \n\n\n\n  \nPlanning for our Shorelands is possible because of the guidance from an amazing project Steering Committee\, which includes experienced planners\, conservation authorities\, and lake stewards. Thank you: Barbara King (Watersheds Canada)\, Janet Taylor (White Lake Preservation Project)\, the LUSH Charity Pot\, the Daniel and Susan Gottlieb Foundation\, the ImpAct Internship Program\, Mark Snider\, Glenn Tunnock\, Terry Rees (Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations)\, Mary Rae\, Leora Berman (The Land Between)\, Katrina Furlanetto (Cataraqui Conservation)\, and Danielle Lachance. \n  \nI look forward to seeing you there! \nChristopher Dennison\nMunicipal Policy Intern\nWatersheds Canada \nwatersheds.ca
