DESCRIPTION:Calling all municipal road departments\, conservation specialists and practioners: \nJoin us for a 2 hour webinar with the Land Between and Eco-Kare International for part 2 of a 2 part webinar series about road ecology and reptiles. In Part 1 we focused on ‘maintenance and adaptive management’ of exclusion fence types with a focus on mitigation installed within and adjacent to the Georgian Bay Biosphere. We also hosted a field day to perform maintenance and discuss adaptive management of mitigation installed on Nobel Road\, Township of McDougall. \nIn this second session we will give an overview of wildlife mitigation for reptiles (with a focus on turtles) in Ontario\, focusing on the following aspects: \n1) Road threats for reptiles and why they are so severe. \n2) Summary of road-wildlife mitigation techniques for turtles/reptiles with a focus on underpasses\, exclusion fencing and habitat enhancements as a site-specific mitigation strategy \n3) Design considerations that include types of exclusion fencing (pros\, cons\, and pricing)\, types of underpasses (pros\, cons\, and pricing)\, habitat enhancements with a focus on nesting mounds near roads \n4) Review from part 1 webinar about maintenance and adaptive management \n5) Procurement and tendering process; grass-roots installations versus contractor\, how can we improve this process so it is competitive\, mainstream\, etc. \n6) Q&A \nTo register follow this link \n

From softwoods to beech\, and now maples too…there are new challenges afoot that are threatening the richness of our forested habitats and favourite haunts. From the foreign moths to bark diseases we are losing our trees. Learn how to identify new pests\, discover how our forests are fairing and what the cycles are from defoliation to new growth. Meet experts and find answers to unravel the mystery of these new patterns. \nJoin us for a full evening: booth displays by local groups\, including our live turtles\, and presentations by Ontario Woodlot Association\, biologists\, and local conservation champions. \nDinner (vegan and venison chili and snacks) and a meet and greet begins at 5pm. Presentations begin at 6pm to 8pm. \nThis event is scheduled to take place at the Catchecoma Community Centre on Highway 507 north of Flinn’s corners. We are awaiting confirmation.
