SUMMARY:Turtle Road Researcher and Nest Protector Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Tracking Turtles on Roads is extremely helpful for conservation. Road mortality is the number one threat to turtles in Ontario. By understanding where turtles are crossing and what types of turtles are found and where\, biologists can design and implement mitigation measures from crossing signs to turtle tunnels\, but also understand better what is happening with populations. Become a Road Researcher by attending this evening workshop. \nAlso learn how to protect turtle nests on your property\, or “babysit” nesting turtles to ensure mother turtles are safe. \nRegister here \n

DESCRIPTION:Leora Berman in Illuminating Consersations \nLeora Berman\, via her negotiated agreements and initiatives to conserve water through the International Joint Commission between Canada and the U.S.A.\, as COO of the charity The Land Between\, works tirelessly to explain the valuable ecological function of the unique area South from Parry Sound through Georgian Bay to Lake Couchiching and East to the Ottawa Valley.  Born in South Africa during the apartheid era\, she became aware of the relationship of people to the land\, culture\, and economies and\, of our responsibilities to one another.  Her work reflects the growing importance of preserving the region called The Land Between as a place of regeneration for insects\, wildlife and people.

SUMMARY:Our Climate\, Our World: Local Responses to Global Realities
DESCRIPTION:Third Age Learning at Lakehead (TALL) Bracebridge: A four part lecture series \nOur Climate\, Our World:  Local Responses to Global Realities \nKnox Presbyterian Church\, 120 Taylor Road\, Bracebridge\, 9:30-11:30a.m. \n  \nNovember 14th – Dr. Brad Dibble \n  \nTitle: “Comprehending the Global Climate Crisis from a Local Perspective:  Rising to the ‘Defining Challenge of our Generation’” \n  \nClimate change is real. And the science behind it has been understood for more than 150 years. But it’s only in the last few decades that we’ve really witnessed its effects first-hand. And what’s even more concerning it that these changes are accelerating at an alarming rate. Understanding the background science of climate change and the impacts which are being felt all over the world makes it easier to motivate people to work toward the solutions to combat it locally and globally. And many of these solutions are economically viable and within our reach if we simply pledge ourselves to the cause. At the close of this series\, how can we rise to the challenges we face? \nDr. Brad Dibble was appointed by the federal Minister of the Environment as one of 25 members to the Sustainable Development Advisory Council\, a membership he still maintains. A Mentor for Climate Reality Canada\, he has received training with Al Gore and endorsements from Col. Chris Hadfield for his work.  He has also written the award-winning book\, Comprehending the Climate Crisis: Everything you need to know about Global Warming and and how to stop it (2012). \n

He has devoted half a century of work to understanding human impacts on Ontario’s lakes\, how the damage can be fixed\, and its re-occurrence prevented.  In 2012\, he was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada. \n

DESCRIPTION:Do You Like Rocks and Geology?Saturday\, October 5th 1:00 p.m. \nKen Lyon\, P.Geo.\, and Alan Brunger\, Professor Emeritus Trent U\, are leading a half-day\, old-fashioned road trip north of the City of Peterborough. We will explore geology features going back a billion years and more in The Land Between\, one of the most priceless natural heritage areas in Ontario. Stops will include Paleozoic limestone and fossils in Lakefield\, the Great Unconformity between inliers of Precambrian and Ordovician rocks at Galesburg\, the metamorphic and igneous core of an ancient mountain range at Gilchrist Bay and\, time permitting\, a Pleistocene glacial spillway at Warsaw Caves that carried about as much water as Niagara Falls does now. Lots of Pleistocene glacial features along the way. Details are in a road log that can be accessed by clicking on the link. This trip complements Ken’s monthly meeting presentation on Oct.9. Not a lot of walking but wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. The trip will be cancelled if it’s pouring rain. Also please bring gas money if you want to car share. The trip is about 65-70 kms. \nPtbo-GilchristBayFieldTripLoop 20190928 \nMeet at the Riverview Park and Zoo\, Water Street North at 1:00 p.m \nAccessibility: Easy \n

SUMMARY:TurtleFest at Scales Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Scales Nature Park in partnership with Turtle Guardians\, launches TurtleFest\, Friday\, August 23\, 10am-5pm and Saturday\, August 24\, 10am-1pm\, as a celebration of its 10th season of operations \n\nAugust 5\, 2019\, (Oro-Medonte) —Scales Nature Park\, an education and conservation facility focused on Canadian reptiles and amphibians\, is celebrating it’s 10th season by hosting TurtleFest on Friday\, August 23 from 10am-5pm and Saturday\, August 24 from 10am-1pm. TurtleFest will be a celebration of turtle conservation efforts in the region\, including the Saving Turtles at Risk Today (START) Project\, and the launch of the Turtle Guardians program. Admission is FREE with a donation to turtle conservation. Activities will include public releases of turtle hatchlings from the START project’s egg incubation program at a nearby wetland\, games and crafts for kids at the Reptile Camp tent\, live music\, a food tent and bake sale\, research project and community partner displays and lots more. \n“The START project has really grown thanks to the tremendous support of our funders and the community of Simcoe-Muskoka\,” says Jeff Hathaway\, founder of Scales Nature Park and director of the START Project. “We’ve had tremendous success at reducing turtle road mortality\, identifying unknown reptile populations\, protecting habitat\, and boosting recruitment through our egg incubation program. This year\, we’ve incubated over 11\,000 turtle eggs recovered from roadsides and other precarious locations where protective cages could not be placed. We hope people will come out to see some of the baby turtles be released into the wild!” START is funded in part by the Canadian Wildlife Federation as part of its Freshwater Turtle program; to learn more visit www.helptheturtles.ca. \nTurtle Guardians (www.turtleguardians.com) has recently revamped it’s efforts across the southern edge of the Canadian shield\, the area known as “The Land Between”\, which contains about 1/3 of Ontario’s remaining turtle populations. Kids (and adults) can join this program\, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation\, and “level up” as they learn to identify turtle species\, monitor populations and participate in Turtle Walks! Leora Berman\, creator of the project\, explains “it’s a tremendous opportunity to engage people across a critical landscape for turtles. Scales Nature Park is a key partner and supporter!” \n  \nTurtle technicians will be on hand to show how to help turtles cross the road safely\, demonstrate turtle tracking techniques\, explain volunteer opportunities and when to contact the START project turtle hotline. If you spot a “rare\, nesting\, or injured/dead” turtle in Simcoe-Muskoka\, you can call or text the turtle hotline at 705-955-4284 to help our conservation efforts. \n  \nBe sure to come out to Scales Nature Park on August 23rd or 24th to see baby turtles\, learn more about turtle conservation\, and have a lot of fun! It’s just off Highway 11 at Oro-Medonte Line 15 South.
