Female nesting turtles are often injured while on route to their nesting sites\, and they also can be easily deterred from nesting if frightened or harassed. Then\, if successfully nesting\, the turtle nests are very quickly predated by small mammals that benefit from living near humans\, such as foxes\, skunks and raccoons. This is why almost all turtle nests in the Land Between bioregion (Ontario’s Highlands) and southern Ontario\, are destroyed\, and eggs eaten within 24 hours of a turtle laying eggs.  Turtle Guardians are volunteers that are trained in stewarding and monitoring nesting turtles. The plant colonizes ditches\, bays and wetland pockets. It grows in such thick mats that turtles\, frogs\, and other animals cannot move through their native habitats. The plant is also tall\, and blocks sight lines along roadsides. In the spring Phrag Fighters locate areas where the plant is growing and harming local habitats. Then\, as are part of a team of 3-4 people\, Phrag Fighter teams adopt one or two wetland areas where they are responsible for removing the invasive plant using best practices (so that the seeds don’t spread). Phrag Fighter teams go out between one and three times each summer between June and early August to spade the plants\, bag them in dark bags\, and transport them to locations or landfills to be deposited.   This workshop teaches Phrag Fighters how to identify the plants\, record locations of the plants in EDDMaps\, and then how to remove the plants using the best practices which help to stop the spread of the plant. Phrag Fighting is hard work but also fun and rewarding! Snakes have very poor eyesight\, smell through their tongues and sense presence through vibrations- and as they are only 2 inches high at best\, their only tactic to stay alive is to put on a good show. Most snakes in The Land Between bioregion (Ontario’s Highlands) are non-venomous\, and for the one that is found on the Georgian Bay Coast\, a person really needs to harass or almost step on the snake for it to strike. In fact\, all snakes are actually quite shy\, preferring to bask under rocks and away from disturbance. The plant colonizes ditches\, bays and wetland pockets. It grows in such thick mats that turtles\, frogs\, and other animals cannot move through their native habitats. The plant is also tall\, and blocks sight lines along roadsides. In the spring Phrag Fighters locate areas where the plant is growing and harming local habitats. Then\, as are part of a team of 3-4 people\, Phrag Fighter teams adopt one or two wetland areas where they are responsible for removing the invasive plant using best practices (so that the seeds don’t spread). Phrag Fighter teams go out between one and three times each summer between June and early August to spade the plants\, bag them in dark bags\, and transport them to locations or landfills to be deposited.   This workshop teaches Phrag Fighters how to identify the plants\, record locations of the plants in EDDMaps\, and then how to remove the plants using the best practices which help to stop the spread of the plant.
