SUMMARY:Design Your Own Shoreline Garden- Online
DESCRIPTION:Our most popular workshop for shoreland owners! Learn about shoreland design considerations and work with experts to walk away with a custom native garden design for your property with a focus on the shoreline areas where upland meets lowland and which is the area that provides the most support for both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. Over 90% of the lake’s ecosystem processes and habitat features are at the shore.  In this workshop we can help you find solutions for privacy\, nuisance geese\, or erosion. Choose selections according to your taste\, colour pallet\, and while maintaining views of the lake. Improve your knowledge and skills at this workshop\, to make informed choices that will also increase biodiversity\, pollinators\, improve water quality\, and support lake health. \nOnline workshops are $40/person \n \nTake pictures of your shore property\, with a focus on the shoreline area\, and have them ready to share online. \n  \nTo register complete the form and proceed to payment*: \n  \n\n\n \n \n Design Your Own Shoreland Garden workshop\n \n \n EmailThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n PhoneLake*Town/County*Workshop*- Select one -Sat. SUMMARY:Phrag Fighters - Survey and Removal
DESCRIPTION:Invasive Phragmites is a large grass-like plant that is taking over Ontario’s wetlands and reducing biodiversity. The plant colonizes ditches\, bays and wetland pockets. It grows in such thick mats that turtles\, frogs\, and other animals cannot move through their native habitats. The plant is also tall\, and blocks sight lines along roadsides. In the spring Phrag Fighters locate areas where the plant is growing and harming local habitats. Then\, as are part of a team of 3-4 people\, Phrag Fighter teams adopt one or two wetland areas where they are responsible for removing the invasive plant using best practices (so that the seeds don’t spread). Phrag Fighter teams go out between one and three times each summer between June and early August to spade the plants\, bag them in dark bags\, and transport them to locations or landfills to be deposited.   This workshop teaches Phrag Fighters how to identify the plants\, record locations of the plants in EDDMaps\, and then how to remove the plants using the best practices which help to stop the spread of the plant. Phrag Fighting is hard work but also fun and rewarding! Phrag Fighters is part of The Land Between’s Community Science Programs. \nAre you part of a Phrag Fighter team or looking to join one?  Join a phrag team here \nSign up for this workshop below: \n\n \n \n Phrag Fighters\n Training events for Phrag Fighter Volunteers \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone*Email*\n \n Event Date and Time\n \n Wednesday\, March 10th @ 7pm (surveying only)\n \n \n Thursday\, March 25th @ 7pm (surveying only)\n \n \n Thursday\, April 22nd @ 7pm (surveying only)\n \n \n Tuesday\, May 25th @ 6:30pm (both surveying and removal)\n \n \n Saturday\, May 29th @ 10am (both surveying and removal)\n \n \n Thursday\, June 3rd @ 6:30 pm (both surveying and removal)\n \n \n Saturday\, July 17th @ 1pm (both surveying and removal)

What is also cool is that snakes are clean- their scales cannot carry bacteria.  Instead snakes control rodent populations helping to keep sources of bacteria away from humans. \nThis workshop and volunteer effort is a chance to overcome your fears of snakes (if you have them) and learn how to identify and monitor our scaled sentinels in vital habitats or on your own property. \nRegister as a snake supervisor before attending this workshop\, and pass the snake ID test here: https://www.thelandbetween.ca/snake-supervisors/ \nAnd then sign up for a workshop here: \nWorkshop dates are: \n– Wednesday\, April 21st @ 7pm \n– Wednesday\, May 26th @ 7pm \n– Saturday\, May 29th @ 1pm \n– Thursday\, July 15th @ 7pm \n– Saturday\, July 17th @ 10am \n\n \n \n Snake Supervisors\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone*Email*\n \n workshop chosen*\n \n Wednesday\, May 26th @ 7pm\n \n \n Saturday\, May 29th @ 1pm\n \n \n Thursday\, July 15th @ 7pm\n \n \n Saturday\, July 17th @ 10am

SUMMARY:Wetland Watcher Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Most turtles in Ontario live in wetland habitats. Wetlands are the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Over 70% of Ontario’s fish and wildlife depend on wetlands at some point in their life cycles. Wetlands are a treasure trove of so many amazing plants\, birds\, fish\, and animals. Over 70% of wetlands in the southern half of the province have been lost to development of one kind or another. Wetland Watchers are volunteer Turtle Guardians that monitor wetlands each week from late June to September and record wildlife observation to help biologists understand the significance of the habitat for wildlife in the area. Volunteers become Level 2 Turtle Guardians. This workshop teaches you how to identify key features and indicator plant species\, basic wetland birds\, frogs\, as well as turtle species and their behaviours. \nPlease register as a Wetland Watcher before attending: https://www.turtleguardians.com/wetland-watcher-registration/ \n\n \n \n Turtle Guardian Training Workshop\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone*Email*\n \n workshop chosen*\n \n RR: Thurs. SUMMARY:Turtle Nest Sitter Training (and Making Nest Protectors)
DESCRIPTION:Nesting turtles are very vulnerable to road traffic and very sensitive to disturbance. Female nesting turtles are often injured while on route to their nesting sites\, and they also can be easily deterred from nesting if frightened or harassed. Then\, if successfully nesting\, the turtle nests are very quickly predated by small mammals that benefit from living near humans\, such as foxes\, skunks and raccoons. This is why almost all turtle nests in the Land Between bioregion (Ontario’s Highlands) and southern Ontario\, are destroyed\, and eggs eaten within 24 hours of a turtle laying eggs.  Turtle Guardians are volunteers that are trained in stewarding and monitoring nesting turtles. They are effectively “on call” throughout nesting season (from June to mid July) and will be dispatched to sites where nesting turtles need support.  This workshop trains willing nest sitter volunteers in monitoring and protecting nesting turtles and their nests\, and includes identification of turtle species\, of various stages of nesting behaviours\, and in protocols for protecting turtles during nesting. \nThe second half of the workshop (the final half hour)  also provides training and guidance for building and installing nest cage protectors in acceptable locations\, and in monitoring nest sites.  Please register as a volunteer Nest Sitters before attending the workshop.  \n\n \n \n Turtle Guardian Training Workshop\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone*Email*\n \n workshop chosen*\n \n RR: Thurs. SUMMARY:Turtle Guardian Road Researcher Training
DESCRIPTION:Road Researchers are volunteer Turtle Guardians that monitor chosen sections of roads once a week- and record turtle observations\, as well as help turtles that are nesting or crossing the roads. Road Researchers are invaluable to turtle conservation efforts in Ontario. They are the first responders and the data they collect helps us understand and estimate local turtle populations\, as well as find and prioritize mitigation hot-spots (areas where we need to install signage\, underpasses/tunnels or other helpful solutions that allow turtles a safer way across the road). \n \nRoad Researchers can choose from priority road maps that are provided\, or choose their own routes. They can also monitor by driving\, cycling or even walking. It is recommended that Road Researchers are part of a team of at least 2 members. Road Researchers are enrolled at Level 3 Guardians. This workshop provides training in turtle identification and protocols for monitoring the sections of roadways that you have chosen. Volunteers have to be over the age of 18 to participate in this program and have registered as Road Researchers before participating. \n\n \n \n Turtle Guardian Training Workshop\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone*Email*\n \n workshop chosen*\n \n RR: Thurs. SUMMARY:Phrag Fighters - Survey and Removal Training

SUMMARY:Nightjar Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Whippoorwills and Common Nighthawks are known as Nightjars- very unique and shy birds that are active at dusk- and are amazing aerial insectivores that eat over 10\,000 mosquitoes and also large moths each night! SUMMARY:Snake Supervisor Training
DESCRIPTION:Snakes are super pest-control agents\, who are often misunderstood. Snakes have very poor eyesight\, smell through their tongues and sense presence through vibrations- and as they are only 2 inches high at best\, their only tactic to stay alive is to put on a good show. SUMMARY:Phrag Fighter - Survey and Removal Training
Most snakes in The Land Between bioregion (Ontario’s Highlands) are non-venomous\, and for the one that is found on the Georgian Bay Coast\, a person really needs to harass or almost step on the snake for it to strike. In fact\, all snakes are actually quite shy\, preferring to bask under rocks and away from disturbance.

These mysterious and loveable birds are declining rapidly in Ontario. Nightjar surveyors travel in pairs along specified routes to listen for these cryptic birds during their most active breeding season\, around the full moon in late May/early June.  This workshop is for volunteers who have registered as Nightjar surveyors\, and will teach individuals how to identify bird calls and complete observation sheets to help biologists monitor habitats and populations. \n\n \n \n Birding Walks and Workshops\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Phone*Number of walkers in your group*Choice of Walk or Workshop*Owl Prowl March.
