CONSERVATION: HOW YOU CAN HELP

Natural Heritage is important because natural areas provide habitat for native plant and animal life, maintain genetic diversity, and have their own intrinsic value. They also provide valuable climatic and hydrological benefits by regulating temperature and water level, and maintaining water and air quality. Natural areas are the basis of the aesthetic appeal of the landscape and so provide ongoing benefits including supporting the local economy through tourism.

Cultural Heritage is important because cultural themes and places tell us who we are, where we are and where we have come from. They ground us by giving us a sense of identity and purpose. Cultural heritage reminds us of our achievements, lessons, and helps to shape our beliefs. Cultural expressions and features support economic development through tourism and marketing.

The Land Between features habitats and species that are unique and also that are sensitive to disruption or disturbance such as the vast amount of shallow waters, lakes and wetlands, the rare alvars, fragile rock barrens, and mixed forests. Therefore these areas need to be stewarded and managed accordingly. As well, important cultural areas, historical sites and built heritage dot the landscape.

Indeed, our health and economies are founded on cultural and natural heritage. We thus need to be aware of  and conserve this heritage in a variety of different ways.
