ABOUT USThe Land Between is what ecologists call an ecotone, a transition zone which lies between the Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands stretching across south-central Ontario from Georgian Bay to Kingston. In the central and eastern parts, it runs just north or south of Highway #7. This landscape is less rugged than in the near-north, but not as flat and arable as the south. Here, you may notice more open areas and exposed bedrock in shades of grey and pink. Looking further you will see that the landscape undulates in patterns of low to high and wet to dry. It has fewer roads than areas to the south, small dispersed communities, scattered farm lands between woods, and a diversity of outdoor enthusiasts. What you are seeing is The Land Between! The Land Between is large, extending from Muskoka and Parry Sound in the west, all the way to Frontenac in the east, at approximately 240km. On average this band is 40 km. wide, although its boundaries are often indistinct. In fact, it may be one of the largest ecotones in Ontario.
The Land Between is a landscape. The Land Between Circle is a group of diverse representatives across the region, who, together with the Program Manager, direct the efforts to enhance the distinct ecological, cultural and economic characteristics of the area through supporting research; advancing collaboration; building capacity for stewardship; and promoting eco-tourism. The many and diverse working partners have become the true constitution of the initiative. The Land Between Circle and its associations respects the rights and privacy of landowners and individuals. The Land Between Strategy 2008-2010 Leora Berman has developed and managed the program starting in 2006. Leora has extensive experience in building and delivering conservation initiatives which involve strategic management and coordinating efforts. Leora holds diplomas and certificates in Environmental Science, Ecological Assessment and Restoration, English and Economics. Leora engages with and enjoys people with varied perspectives and backgrounds, who respect the natural environment and appreciate diversity. |
